Different Rock Formations Flashcards
Igneous
Lava hardens as it cools during which rocks form crystals
Sedimentary
Layer of sediment are compacted together until they become solid rock
Metamorphic
Formed when other rocks (igneous, metamorphic) are changed by heat and pressure. New rocks are usually harder and more compact
Chalk
Purer younger form of lime stone. Very porous medium resistance but stronger than clays and younger sands
Limestone - charicteristics
Not very resistant easily scratched
Clay
muds diposited by rivers or at sea
Soft and crumbly generally weak and when compacted it becomes shale
Granite
Formed from magma cooling deep underground
Contains crystals and is very resistant
Schist
Formed by metamorphis of slate where it partly partly melted and soldifies
Very resistant
Slate
Formed from heated muds or shale
Very resistant
