Establishing shot
A shot of the location, usually from a distance; informs the viewer where the film is set
Aerial (bird’s eye) shot
: a shot from the sky; from a plane, helicopter top of a tall building, etc. Now drones make this easier and cheaper
Wide/long shot
An extremely wide shot; shows the entire surroundings of the scene
Types of shot size
Medium shot: the pianist
Close up: the shining
Extreme close-up shot: the Blair witch project
Shot angles:
Dutch angle/tilt: oblique, tilted angle
Low angle
High angle
Overhead shot
POV shot- establishes what the character is seeing; can be literal or implied
Dolly
A moveable platform supporting the camera, camera operator, and camera assistant. Sometimes moves on tracks for smoothness. Can be driven or pushed by someone known as Dolly grip
Shot movement: pan
Pan: camera moves horizontally on a fixed axis; short for panorama
Tracking shot
The camera follows a person or object
Shot movement
Tilt: camera moves vertically on a fixed axis
Crane shot (shot movement)
Movement of a camera placed on a crane
