different effects that contribute to coastlines Flashcards
What impacts does climate change have on coastlines?
More carbon dioxide in the air will increase rates of chemical weathering such as carbonation it will also warm seas contributing the sea level rise due to melting ice and thermal expansion of sea salts. this can effect areas such as Bangladesh which is at threat of rising sea levels. The rising of sea level will displace 15% of its population and submerge 16% of its land.
What are some causes of climate change and how will they impact local coatslines?
Most causes of climate change are anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, this can cause phenomena such as acid rain. The gas release has been increasing since industrialisation.
How will climate change affect storms? and how does this affect waves?
There will be an increased frequency in storms and this is likely to cause strong winds, these strong winds can create high energy destructive waves which will have considerable erosional power.
How will climate change impact erosion?
The increased energy in seas will also mean more material fluvial and offshore can be transported and for greater distances. If no protective measures are put into place it could leave areas vulnerable to erosion.
In extreme cases what will happen if climate change increases storm surges?
If a storm surge is combined with sea level rise, flooding will occur and reach further inland, causing economic, social and environmental impacts/damage.
How will climate change impact sea levels?
Data from the IPCC indicates that from 1901 to 2010 avaerge sea levels have increased by 0.19m. This will cause flooding sue to higher tides, and leave areas vulnerable to coastal processes as higher tides will erode more material from beaches catalysing massmovement.
What are the economic/social losses of coastal recession?
The damages caused to houses and businesses mean that people are forced to relocate whilst repairs are being done and financial support may be needed to support this. For LIC’s there will be limited financial assets and may be on international aid. Whereas in HIC’s many people cant get enough insurance to cover potential damages and many houses lose value as the rate of coastal recession increases.
