Differenc Between Prokaryotes And Eukaryotes Flashcards
Nucleus?
Prokaryote- no true nucleus, only an area where DNA is found
Eukaryote- distinct nucleus, with a nuclear envelope
DNA?
Prokaryote- DNA not associated with proteins
Eukaryote- DNA is associated with proteins called histones
DNA structure?
Prokaryote- circular strands called plasmids
Eukaryote- no plasmids, DNA is linear
Organelles?
Prokaryote- no membrane bound organelles
Eukaryote- membrane bound organelles, such as mitochondria
Chloroplasts?
Prokaryote- no chloroplasts, only bacterial chlorophyll associated with cell surface membrane in some bacteria
Eukaryote- chloroplasts present in plants and algae
Ribosomes?
Prokaryote- 70S (smaller)
Eukaryote- 80S (larger)
Cell wall?
Prokaryote- made of murein
Eukaryote- made of cellulose where present (or chitin in fungi)
Capsule?
Prokaryote- may have outer mucilaginous layer called a capsule
Eukaryote- no capsule
