How does obesity affect health?
It can increase the risk of developing other diet related diseases
What factors can increase the risk of hypertension?
Obesity, poor diet, lack of exercise, alcohol, stress, age, family history, smoking
How can you reduce the risk of developing hypertension?
Avoid obesity, reduce alcohol intake, avoid salt, exercise regularly, stop smoking, avoid stress, reduce fat, eat plenty potassium
How does CHD (angina) effect health?
The blood flow is reduced, oxygen and nutrients are not able to reach the heart and the heart muscles become starved, it causes chest pain and sometimes breathlessness or dizziness after exertion
How does CHD (coronary thrombosis) effect health?
Artery’s become completely blocked, deposits of cholesterol are found in the lining of artery walls, they can roughen the interiors and make clots more likely
What dietary factors increase the risk of CHD?
Over eating, high intake of fat, low intake of omega 3 fatty acids, high intake of salt, low intake of dietary fibre, low intake of fruit and veg, high intake of sugar
What other factors increase the risk of CHD?
Smoking, heredity, high intake of alcohol, lack of physical exercise, emotional stress, gender
What are the signs and symptoms of type 2 diabetes?
Very tired, needing to wee a lot, extreme thirst, cuts and grazes taking a long time to heal
What are the causes of type 2 diabetes?
Family history of type 2 diabetes, diet, being overweight, lifestyle
How does type 2 diabetes effect health?
People with diabetes are more at risk of heart disease, strokes, hypertension, kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, skin conditions, dental diseases, circulation problems
What are the symptoms of osteoporosis?
Chronic backache, becoming shorter in height, developing a stoop, chest pains and feeling food ‘stuck’
How can you prevent osteoporosis?
Regular exercise, eat a diet rich in calcium, phosphorus and vitamin d, expose skin to sunlight, stop smoking, use alcohol in moderation, do not become underweight, decrease salt in diet
How does iron deficiency anaemia effect health?
Feeling tired/weak, dizziness, shortness of breath, pale skin, rapid heartbeat, poor memory, weight loss, abnormally smooth tounge
How can iron deficiency anaemia be prevented?
Ensure you eat iron rich foods everyday, ensure you eat foods rich in vitamin c everyday
How can dental caries be prevented?
Eat milk cheese and dairy products, eat foods high in fibre
