Diet Planning Guides Flashcards
Estimated Average Requirement (EAR)
Daily intake value that is estimated to meet the requirement, as defined by the specified indicator of adequacy, in 50% of the individuals in a life stage or gender group; used in setting the RDA;
Life stage/gender
infants, children, males, females, pregnancy, lactation
Age
0-6 months, 7-12 months, 1-3 years, 4-8 years, 9-13 years, 14-18 years, 19-30 years, 31-50 years, 51-70 years, >70 years
Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)
Average daily dietary intake level that is sufficient to meet the nutrient requirements of nearly all (97-98%) healthy individuals in a specific life stage and gender group. Calculated by EAR+ 2SD
Adequate Intake (AI)
When sufficient scientific evidence is not available to estimate an average requirement (no EAR)… an intake value is recommended that is based on experimentally derived intake levels or approximations of observed mean nutrient intakes by a group of healthy people.
Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL)
Maximum intake that is unlikely to pose risks of adverse health effects in a specific life stage group.
Estimated Energy Requirement (EER)
Average daily energy (kcal) needed for each life-stage group
Daily Values
found on food labels
Reference Daily Intake
Vitamins and minerals; based on highest RDA value for a specific category
Daily Reference Value (DRV)
For nutrients with no RDA (fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrate, dietary fiber, sodium, potassium)
fat free
< 0.5 g fat/serving
low fat
3 g or less/serving
reduced or less fat
at least 25% less/serving than reference food
lean
< 10 g total fat, ≤ 4.5 or less saturated fat, <95 mg cholesterol
extra lean
<5g total fat, <2 g saturated fat, <95 mg cholesterol
