What is a balanced diet?
The correct balance of all the food groups throughout your eating habits
What are the components of a healthy diet and what are they used for?
- Carbahydrates - release energy
- Fats - warmth and to release energy
- Protein - for growth, cell repair and cell replacement
- Fibre - keep everything in our digestive system moving smoothly
- Vitamins - to keep skin, bones, blood and everything healthy
- Minerals- to keep skin, bones, blood and everything healthy
- Water - to hydrate our body.
What is your metabolism and metabolic rate?
Metabolism - the chemical reactions in your body that keep you alive.
Metabolic rate - the speed at which they occur.
What effects metabolic rate?
^ Amount of muscle someone has - more muscle =more energy = higher metabolic rate
^ Size - bigger you are the more energy you need = higher m.r
^ Genders - males m.r is higher than females as they generally have more muscle and are bigger.
^ Exercise boosts metabolic rate.
^ Inherited factors - under-active thyroid gland
Problems caused by an unbalanced diet?
Obesity - arthritis, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer.
Eating too little - slow growth, fatigue, poor resistance to disease, irregular periods, deficiency disease (scurvy)
Benefits of exercise
People who exercise are generally healthier.
It increases the energy body uses and decreases the amount stored.
Builds muscle and boosts metabolic rate
