Diet and metabolic rate Flashcards
What do carbohydrates do?
release energy
what do fats do?
provide insulation and are a back up source of energy
what do proteins do?
growth, cell repair and cell replacement
what does fibre do?
keeps everything running smoothly in your digestive system, and gives your faeces consistency
what do vitamins and minerals do?
they keep your skin, bones, blood and everything else generally heathy
why do you need energy?
to fuel the chemical reactions that take place inside your body that keep you alive
what is the process called when you convert your food into energy?
metabolism, and the speed of which it occurs is your metabolic rate.
why do people with more muscle have a higher metabolic rate
because muscle requires more energy than fat
why do physically big people require more energy then smaller people
the bigger you are, the more energy your body needs to be supplied with.
why do men have a higher metabolic rate than women
on average, they’re slightly bigger; so have a larger proportion of muscle
why does exercise boost your metabolic rate
because it builds muscle
