what is a balanced diet?
A diet is usually a lifestyle choice. It means the balance of different food types that a person consumes, as well as the quality and quantity. A balanced diet maintains health and wellbeing because it contains all the nutrients the body needs in the correct proportions.
The food groups
- Fruit and vegetables (fresh, frozen, tinned).
- Meat, fish, eggs, pulses and nuts.
- Starchy foods (potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and whole grains).
- Dairy products (Milk, cheese and yogurt).
- Oils (vegetable oil, butters).
Fibre and water
As well as a range of nutrients from different food group, a balanced diet also includes fibre and water.
Fibre is important in the diet to lower the risk of heart disease and maintain a healthy digestive system.
Water is used in all cells, helps regulate body temperature and also aids digestion.
What is malnourishment?
malnutrition is lack of proper nutrition, caused by not having enough to eat, not eating enough of the right things, or being unable to use the food that one does eat.
Quality of foods and nutrients
Fresh, unprocessed foods are the most nutritious, or contain the most nutrients.
Food groups and their main nutrients
Fruit and vegetables: Vitamins, minerals.
Starchy foods: Carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins.
Meat, fish, eggs, pulses: protein, fats, iron (mineral).
Dairy products: protein, fats, vitamins, calcium (mineral).
Oils: Fats
Nutrients and their purpose
Vitamins: Healthy immune system, skin and eyes.
Carbohydrates: Boost energy levels.
Protein: Growth and repair of tissues.
Minerals: Healthy teeth, blood, skin and hair.
Fats: Energy, healthy cell structure, help vitamin absorption.
An unbalanced diet
A diet that does not contain a balance of nutrients will have a negative impact on health and wellbeing.
Negative effects of nutrient deficiency
A lack of certain nutrients may lead to illnesses such as;
- Anaemia (reduced numbers of red blood cells).
- Rickets (a bone disease).
- Poor growth.
- Depression.
- Tiredness.
- Anorexia (excessive weight loss.
Negative effects of excess nutrients
A person who is obese (very overweight) may:
- Be more prone to illness, such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and stroke.
- Have a reduced life expectancy.
- Be less able to exercise.
- Have poor self-concept.
