What is a healthy diet?
To have a healthy diet it must have a good balance of all the necessary nutrients
What are the eight top tips for healthy eating?
1 - base meals on high fibre starchy carbohydrates
2 - eat lots of fruit and veg
3 - Eat more fish, including a portion of oily fish
4 - Cut down on saturated fat and sugar
5 - Eat less salt: no more than 6g a day for adults
6 - Get active and be a healthy weight
7 - Do not get thirsty
8 - Do not skip breakfast
What is coeliac disease?
When the body cannot absorb protein found in wheat, rye, barley and some oats. Foods with these in cannot be eaten without abdominal pain.
What is anaemia?
When the body lacks iron which is needed for red blood cell production. Red meats and green leafy vegetables are good sources of iron.
What is diabetes type 2?
When the body has become resistant to insulin and cannot utilise the glucose produced by carbohydrates. Healthy eating and healthy lifestyle can prevent this.
What is cardiovascular disease?
When the body develops high blood pressure, high cholesterol and blocked arteries leading to heart disease. It can be prevented by following the healthy eating guidlines.
What is obesity?
When the body takes in more energy than is used so the spare energy is stored as fat. Following the healthy eating guidelines can prevent this.
How can a diet help bone and dental health?
A diet should contain foods high in calcium and vitamin D. This helps bones become stronger. Sweet foods and fizzy drinks should only be consumed on rare occasions to protect teeth.
What are food allergies and food intolerances?
Allergies - a serious reaction to a certain foods which can cause death.
Intolerances - a mild reaction to certain foods which can cause unpleasant symptoms.
What are Lacto-ovo vegetarians?
Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat dairy foods and eggs but not meat or fish
What are Lacto vegetarians?
Lacto vegetarians eat dairy foods but not eggs, milk or fish
What are vegans?
Vegans do not eat any animal produce
What are the reasons for being vegetarian?
- not liking animals being killed
- religious beliefs
- dislike texture of flavour of meat
What are the disadvantages of being vegetarian?
Eliminating meat and fish from diet is an easy way to become deficient in micronutrients such as iron and vitamin b12. A heavy reliance on dairy products can create an imbalance because of the amount of fat.
What can and cant Buddhists eat?
Cannot eat:
- beef
- pork
- poultry
Can eat:
- eggs
- milk
- some fish
- alcohol
