Pt with celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, or by choice

Plant proteins are “incomplete” and lack certain amino acids needed for growth and tissue maintenance
Supplement with other plants that provide these to get essential amino acids
What vitamin is only found in foods with animal origin?
B12 - we ned to make sure our vegans and vegetarians take supplement or have fortified foods high in this
In a vegetarian diet, what might not be as easily absorbed as meat sources?
Iron and Zinc from plant sources
What can be low if milk in not in diet?
Calcium
What natural remidies can a pregnant person take to cope with nausea and vomiting?
Antiemetics like:
-Vitamin B6 (200mg/day)
-Ginger (up to 1000mcg/day)
-Pericardium 6 acupressure (pressure point on posterior wrist)
What drug combination could be prescribed to reduce nausea and vomiting in pregnancy?
-Pyridoxine +Doxylamine (Diclectin)
What can we teach our patient to manage nausea and vomiting during pregnancy?
-Small amounts of food every 1-2hrs
-Do not mix food and drink
-Do not skip meals
-Avoid strong odors
-Avoid sudden movements
-Try salty and tart food
Breathe fresh air
-Try candies and gum to eliminate metallic taste in mouth
-Avoid brushing teeth immediately after eating
What can we teach our patients to do to manage constipation related to pregnancy?
-Eat more fibre (28g/day)
-Drink more water (2.2L/day (Warm fluids may induce peristalsis more than cold fluids)
-Regular exercise
-Laxatives should not be taken unless Pt talks to a physician
What can we teach our patients to do to manage heartburn that’s related to pregnancy?
-Eat small, frequent meals
-Add protein to every snack
-Avoid fluid with meals
-Avoid foods high in fat, spicy foods, acidic foods, and chocolate or mint
-Avoid lying down immediately after eating
-Not all antacids are safe. Pt should consult a physician before using them.
