Diesel Theory Flashcards
What is Compression ratio ?
Comparison of Max. Volume of air to Min. Volume of air in cylinder
Cylinder
Contains piston and combustion process
What are pistons ?
Connected to crank shaft
What’re Connecting rods?
Connects piston to crank shaft to convert reciprocal to rotary motion
What is a Crankshaft ?
Drives the load (generator)
What’re bearing for in engine block
Support weight of crank shaft
What is flywheel ?
Provides inertia to reduce vibration, connect for turning gear
What is cylinder head ?
Top of engine block that controls combustion process
What is four stroke cycle ?
Intake stroke, compression stroke, combustion stroke,& exhaust stroke
Why do diesels use 4 stroke?
There is always one cylinder in a combustion stroke
How do starting systems work on SBOG(station blackout generator)?
SBOG uses 24VDC starting motor (similar to truck engine)
How does emergency diesel generator starting system work?
Uses compressed air to force piston down during power stroke
Which components does lube oil system provide lubrication to ?
Crankshaft,camshaft, turbocharger, generator
How does Emergency diesel generator keep bearings warm ?
Motor driven oil pump providing warm oil flow
What happens to motor driven pump when Emergency Diesel Generator is started ?
Engine driven pump takes over for the motor driven pump
