Diesel Engines Flashcards
Engine block
Holds and supports all of the engine components
Cylinder/cylinder block
The cylinder guides the piston whilst also providing protection to the engine block
Cylinder head
Closes off the cylinder, also forms the combustion chamber
Head gasket
Makes an air tight seal so water, oil and gases don’t leak out
Sump
Acts as a reservoir
Piston
Cylindrical metallic component that moves up and down
Piston rings
Provide a sliding seal between the outer edge of the piston, 2 compression, 1 oil comtrol
Connecting rod
Connects the piston to the crank shaft
Gudgeon pin
Connects the piston to the connecting rod
Crank shaft
Changes the reciprocating motion of the piston
Fly wheel
Promotes smooth running during the non power strokes
Cam shaft
Controls the opening and closing of the inlet and exhaust valves
Valves
Opens and closes to let fresh air in and exhaust out the combusted sooty air
Push rods
Transfer motion from the cam shaft to the rocker arms, opening the valves
Rocker arm
A pivoting arm that transfers motion from the pushrod to activate the valves
