Diesel Engines Flashcards
List the applications/ uses of a diesel engine on board
Generator
Air compressor
Fire pump
Main engines
Explain how cylinders are numbered on a in line engine and v engine.
Incline cylinders are numbered consecutively from the free end
Vee engines are numbered consecutively from free end with A bank on the left and B bank on right
Explain the purpose of a crank shaft
Changes reciprocating motion to rotatory motion to provide a drive
Explain the purpose of a fly wheel.
Stores potential w every and promotes smooth running to non power strokes
Purpose of the cam shaft
Controls induction and exhaust valves timings through push rods.
Explain the purpose of a push rod
Transfers motion from cam shaft to rocker arm.
List the four stroke cycle
Induction
Compression
Power
Exhaust
Explain the purpose and process of a valve overlap
A valve overlap is at the end of the 4th cycle the induction valve opens slightly with the exhaust valve with clean air to help the cooling of the exhaust
What is the engine block a cylinder block
The block holds the engine components and the cylinder block hold the pistons
What holds the piston and connecting rod
Gudgeon pin
Lub oil pump
Supplies high pressure oil to the engine bearings, providing low pressure oil to the other parts of the engine.
It’s a positive displacement pump.
Has a valve on the discharge side which allows oil to enter the sump
List the test performed on a coolant system
Acidity - equestrian fumes
Salinity - salt water
Density - water/ al39
List the four test which are carried using the kitti wake oil tester
Acidity-
Water
Insolubles
Viscosity
What are the four safety devices fitted to a diesel engine
Low lube oil pressure
Low coolant pressure
High live oil pressure
High coolant temperature
Engine over speed
If a safety device trips who must be inform
ME officer of the watch
