Basic System 22 Flashcards
What’s is the definition of a system
A series of pipes and components to move a substance from one place to another.
What the the two types of systems and give an example of each
Closed system and open system
Examples - water to tap (open)
Fuel system (open)
Refrigeration system(closed) Hydraulic system (closed)
State three methods of measuring the level of a tank.
Gauge glass
Sounding tube
Content gauge
State the purpose of a strainer and what it may be constructed from.
To remove large debate from a fluid from service tank. Found before the filter.
Metallic ( metal plate with holes )
Give examples of materials used in pipe work and a example of each.
Copper - fresh water
Plastic - waste
Brass- castings
Copper nickel - lube oil
Phosphor bronze - salt water/ high pressure
What would need to be considered when selecting a material for a seal
Temperature
Fluid
Pressure
Give examples of material used to manufacture seals
Cork
Paper
Wool silicon
Wax
NAF (non asbestos fibre)
State examples of seals used
Keeler ring - high pressure pipe work connection.
Mechanical seal - rotating components eg pump shaft.
State 6 types of valves
Non return valve
(PRV) pressure relief valve
Reducing valve
Pressure control valve
Globe valve
Gate valve
Saunders valve
(Rov) remote operated valve
Ball seated cock
Explain the function of a pressure relief valve
Realise pressure to prevent over pressurisation
Explain the function of a non return valve
Prevents reverse flow in a system
State two different types of non return valve
Flap valve
Spring / piston valve
What are the two main types of pump and how do they differ.
Positive displacement pump - has a constant flow rate. Slower flow increase pressure
Dynamic displacement pump - Higher flow lower pressure, higher flower slower pressure.
A gear pump is what type of pump
Positive displacement
State 4 types of system indicators
Bourdon tube
Tachometer
Manometer
Thermometer
