- Increase blood flow
- Increase metabolism
- Decrease edema
- Decrease inflammation
- Decrease pain

Contraindications
A
- Metal in the treatment area (watches, necklaces, etc.)
- Synthetic materials must be insulated from cables by toweling
- Other electrical devices within 15’ of diathermy machine
- Remove hearing aids
- Moisture (under casts, skin folds, etc.)
- Fluid-filled cysts
- Amniotic fluid
- Remove contact lenses
- Peripheral vascular disease
- Systemic edema
- During menstruation
- Testicles
- Pain and temperature sensory deficits
- Bony prominences
- Epiphyseal centers in children
- Osteoporosis

Physiological Effect
A
- Increased cell metabolism and function (enhancement of soft tissue healing)
- Stimulation of tissue releases histamine
- Increases capillary dilation
- Enhanced oxygen-carrying capacity of erythrocytes

A
Treatment Time
- 10 - 20 minutes
- Must use towels to absorb surface moisture
Dosages
- I: Athermic (non-detectable warmth
- II: Barely perceptible warmth
- III: Pleasant warmth
- IV: Maximum tolerable warmth
