Smile line
Symmetry
Incisal show

TMJ
What intra oral features are key to a denture assessment?
Occlusion
Excersions
Guidance
Saddle and support areas
Tooth status (periodontal, caries)
Overeruption
Prognosis of abutment teeth
Status of existing restorations
What are the general treatment options for replacing missing teeth?
Accept and monitor
Denture
Bridge
Implants
At what stage of the treatment plan should denture construction begin?
After all other restorative work as been completed, everything needs to be in order before master impressions.
What questions would you ask a patient about their current dentures?
Are they happy with the current dentures?
How old are the dentures?
Did the dentures fit initially?
Are they able to eat with the dentures?
What are their main concerns with the dentures?
How many have you had, and which were the best?
What features of the soft tissues are you going to consider when assessing a person for a complete denture?
Ridge assessment:
- Height
- Flabby
- Resorbed
- Width (knife edge)
What features of the hard tissues are you going to consider when assessing a person for a complete denture?
OVD, RVD, RCP
Harder areas on the ridge
How do you test for retention on a patients dentures?
Push on the incisal edges, and look movement on the posterior teeth.
How do you check for stability of a patients complete denture?
Press unilaterally on the posterior teeth, and check for movement on the opposing side.
How do you check for support of a patients denture?
Press on the occlusal surfaces of the teeth and check if denture sinks or causes discomfort.
How do you calculate OVD?
Multiple measurements, then an average with a Willis bite gauge.
What factors impact the aesthetics of the denture?
Smile line
Incisal show
Curve of speed
Buccal corridor
Naso-labial angle
Shade and form
Which has greater strength for a denture, CoCr or acrylic?
CoCr
Which has greater comfort for a denture, CoCr or acrylic?
CoCr:
- Thinner skeleton as it has higher impact strength
- Minimal palatal coverage
- Greater temperature conductivity
- Greater support
Which has greater retention for a denture, CoCr or acrylic?
Both good depending on case
- CoCr: Can incorporate many different types of clasps, and has an accurate fit
- Acrylic: Good with appropriate case, dependent on border seal, can also incorporate stainless steel clasps.
