Q

Arteriovenous Fistulae (AV)

A

Native artery and native vein anastomoses together artificially. Cause venous and arterial blood to mix together.

8
Q

Why are AV Fistulas created for haemodyalisus

A

Connection allows fast flowing blood to travel up vein. Vein thickens and strengthens the fistula is then able to withstand regular puncturing.

Q

Common types of AV Fistula include

A

Radiocephalic (preferred) cephalic vein to radial artery at wrist
Brachiocephalic joining cephalic vein to brachial artery at elbow

16
Q

What does it mean for a vein to become arterialized

A

Vein takes on arterial characteristics; pulsatile flow, vein dilates high pressure, high velocity, low resistance

17
Q

What type of fistula is this

A

Radiocephalic fistula

18
Q

What type of fistula is this

A

Brachiocephalic fistula

19
Q

What type of fistula is this

A

Brachialbasilic fistula
