Dialysis Flashcards
Dialysis is meant to be temporary or permanent
Temporary solution while pt awaits kidney transplant
When is dialysis necessary
When a patient suffers kidney failure waste materials accumulate in the blood which are normally filtered out by the kidneys
What are the two types of dialysis
Peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis
What is peritoneal dialysis
Dialysis fluid is injected into peritoneal of patients stomach. The daily’s are absorbs waste products, fluid is emptied in the morning.
What is hemodialysis
Filters blood directly through an external dialyzer
How often does a patient go for a dialysis treatment
4hours 3x a week
Arteriovenous Fistulae (AV)
Native artery and native vein anastomoses together artificially. Cause venous and arterial blood to mix together.
Why are AV Fistulas created for haemodyalisus
Connection allows fast flowing blood to travel up vein. Vein thickens and strengthens the fistula is then able to withstand regular puncturing.
Inflow refers to
Arterial system or artery directly involved with fistula
Outflow refers to
the venous system or vein directly involved with the fistula
Common types of AV Fistula include
Radiocephalic (preferred) cephalic vein to radial artery at wrist
Brachiocephalic joining cephalic vein to brachial artery at elbow
Brachiobasilic joining basilic vein to to brachial artery at elbow crease
Where should fistula be placed
Patients non dominant arm as dismally as possible
If non dominant arm is not an option other possible locations include
Dominant arm or groin
Once mature is the artery or vein punctured and why
Vein because veins are more resilient
How long does it take for the fistula to become mature
4-6 weeks
