Because generalization? and English is not a superior language, y’know - gotta treat all the languages equally

Shift diagnosis from “typically-developing” to “disordered”
Alter the severity category from “mild” to “moderate” or “severe”

Type of sound involved
Phonetic context
Stress pattern

How does final consonant cluster reduction in AAE vary?
Occurs only when the consonants in a cluster share voicing
More likely in single morpheme words( -st in “mist” vs. “missed”)
More likely when followed by a consonant (“best pear” vs. “best apple”)
More likely in unstressed syllables
What are some challenges in transcribing AAE, and how do we differentiate between difference/disorder?
Subtle changes in vowel length, nasalization, and final obstruent devoicing
AAE characteristics will follow a pattern, where errors will occur more globally
Check phonetic context- is there a rule system in place?
Separate out characteristics of AAE from true errors
Base your diagnosis on errors only

Differences not only in phonemic inventory, but also timing, stress, rhythm, and intonation
