Diagrams Flashcards
Noun clause
How do we diagram a noun clause? Why?
Example:
The teacher asked who could identify dependent clause
With a tower or pedestal.
Because the noun clause is embedded within an independent clause. The tower/pedestal structure raises and seperates the dependent noun clause (subject + verb) above the baseline.
Placement of modifiers
Where should adjectives, adverbs, prepositional phrases serving as adjectives/adverbs be placed in a diagram?
Modifiers should be placed UNDERNEATH the word they modify
Pattern 2 and 4 use a tower/pedestal structure when the predicate adjective is a … ?
Prepositional phrase
In Pattern 9 and 10, objective complement (oc) is necessary to complete the idea of the sentence (modifying or renaming the direct object).
These sentences are generated from a limited number of verbs, usually involving an act of making/selecting. Name some of the verbs.
9: s + tv + do + adjective (oc)
10: s + tv + do + noun (oc)
Make, consider, think, judge, prefer, select, elect, nominate, vote, choose
What is special with pattern 8?
How should the indirect object be diagramed?
s + tv + io + do
Pattern 8 is the only pattern with three noun slots: subject, indirect object, direct object (in that order) and are three seperate entities
Diagram the indirect object on a prepositional phrase structure beneath the verb.
