Diagnostic Tests for Thyroid Function Flashcards
What is the normal range for TSH?
0.5 - 6 U/dL.
What does high and low TSH indicate?
High - hypothyroidism, Low - hyperthyroidism.
What is the T3 and T4 test?
Test shows levels of free T3 an T4 in blood. With hyperthyroidism, the levels of one or both of these hormones in the blood are higher than normal.
What is the Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) test?
Also called a thyroid stimulating antibody test, measures the level of TSI in the blood. Most people with Graves’ disease have this antibody, but hyperthyroidism caused by other conditions does not.
What is the Radioactive Iodine Uptake test?
It measures the amount of iodine the thyroid collects from the bloodstream. Low levels of iodine uptake might be a sign of hypothyroidism, whereas high levels could support Graves’ disease diagnosis.
What is a Thyroid Scan?
It shows how and where iodine is distributed in the thyroid. The images of nodules and other possible irregularities help the provider diagnose the cause of the person’s hyperthyroidism.
What are TSH and T4 levels in primary hypothyroidism?
TSH is low and T4 is high.
What are TSH and T4 levels in secondary hypothyroidism?
TSH is low and T4 is low.
