Diagnostic Processes Flashcards
What are the three most important things to confirm on any diagnostic study
Verify that you have the right study on the right patient for the right day!
When should diagnostic imaging be delayed/omitted?
when a patient is unstable or imaging would delay emergency surgery/care
What are some indications for plain film radiography?
inexpensive
easy to see bones
easy access
What are some contraindications for plain film radiography?
pt unstable
need to be able to stand for some images
may not be best modality for injury
must be able to remain still
What ciew is preferred frontal view for CXR?
PA view
What are indications for a CXR?
trauma
infection
cardiac etiology
tumors
hardware
interstitial lung disease
environmental toxins
confirm tube placement
pneumonias
What are the contraindications for a CXR?
unstable to be transported
not able to stand, hold deep breath
other images would be preferred
What are the indications for abdominal XR?
obstruction
perforation
tube placement
foreign bodies
trauma
stones
What are the CI for abdominal xR?
different imaging modality would be better
patient unstable
not able to stand/hold breath
What are the indications for extremity Xr?
injury/fracture
focal lesions
soft tissue injuries
What are the CI for extremity Xr?
pt unstable
life threatening injuries that take priority
other studies would be better
if getting a CT/MRI of that area anyway
should you only order 1 view on an xray?
NO
What is something that should be orderd on pediatric xrays?
A comparison radiologyical studies on pediatric patients who still have open growth plates
What are the three types of CT studies for abodmen
Non contrast-renal colic
IV contrast-opacities in solid organs, bowel wall, vascular structures, aortic dissection
enteric contrast (oral)- opacifies bowel lumen
What are the indications for CT?
greatest diagnostic capability
tet of choice for most abdominal pathology
high sensitvity
can detect alternative diagnoses when primary disorder is not clear
