Pertussis Diagnosis
Acute cough lasting at least 14 days with one of paroxysmal cough, posttussive vomiting or inspiratory whoop.
Consistent clinical case def confirmed by PCR
Cough that lasts at least 14 days in an outbreak
Diphtheria
Sx initially general & nonspecific URI (Sore throat)
Low-grade fever, chills, sore throat
Malaise, weakness, prostration, HA
Development of localized pseudomembrane can occur in any portion of respiratory tract
(dense, gray layer of necrotic tissue & inflammatory cells)
Cervical adenopathy “bulls neck”
Swollen mucosa - back of mouth
Cervical Adenopathy
Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF)
Fever, Arthralgias, nodules, skin rash - Erythema Marginatum, Sydenham’s chorea (jerking movement of hands, feet, face - look like you’re dancing) –> can lead to Carditis
ASO (Antistreptolysis O) - elevated titers indicate streptococcal infection in 95% of pt’s.
Culture –> Group A Streptococcus
CRP & ESR usually elevated.
Botulism
Causes paralysis of affected muscles:
> 90% of pts have 3-5 signs/sx:
- N/V, dysphagia, diplopia, dilated/fixed pupils & an extremely dry mouth….
Affects:
- GI –> N/V, abd pain, dry mouth/throat, malaise, dizziness
- Neuro –> affects cranial nerves, blurred vision, diplopia…
- Resp –> muscle weakness, diaphragm, resp failure,
- Renal sys -> Urinary retention etc
Types of Chlamydia?
- Chlamydophila trachoma
- Chlamydophila trachomatis
- Chlamydophila pneumoniae
- Chlamydophila psittaci
- Chlamydophila trachomatis PNA
Chlamydia
Women:
- Burning sensation during urination
- Painful sexual intercourse
- Rectal pain or discharge
- Vaginal discharge
Men:
- Burning sensation during urination
- Discharge from the penis or rectum
- Testicular tenderness or pain
- Rectal discharge or pain
