The 4ds are useful in summarising how
Mental health professionals might define abnormality but there is clear scale between abnormal and normal issues of judgement. Sometimes there presence of 4d but mental disorder might not be diagnosed
David 2009 suggest that
Using 4ds can help practicioner to see when a condition might need a dsm diagnosis. One of difficulties of diagnosis is deciding when a characteristic might be problematic enough to become a clinical diagnosis. Deviance can be difficult to define because
Different mental disorders show similar defiance however some diagnosis clearly illustrated by deviance
Dysfunction can be difficult to define because

Dysfunction can be difficult to
Use in diagnosis because many life events and issues can be dysfunctional. Davis 2009 points out that to receive this diagnosis the episodes of depression must affect functioning with regard to persons work social life. Dysfunction must occur in more than one part of a person’s life for depression to be diagnosed
Distress may be hard to measure
Because a person may unable to function but not experience feelings of distress whilst someone can experience a great deal of distress and still be able to function
Abnormality in regard to distress is these negative feelings occur
Occur incosenditly or longer than normal
Strength of the 4ds
David 2009 has shown how the 4ds can be used with dsm-iv-tr and adds 5th duration. The 4ds have a pratical application because they are useful when considering their symptons of issues become a clinical diagnosis
. The 4ds support the validity of the dsm as a diagnostic classification system in that various diagnosed are shown to focus on the specific ds showing ea h has value
. The reliability of diagnosis can be improved when clinancian communicate with each other increasing reliability
