Diabetic Retinopathy Flashcards
What is diabetic reinopathy?
Diabetic retinopathy is retinal damage due to chronic hyperglycemia.
What are the two types of diabetic retinopathy?
- nonproliferative
2. proliferative
What is nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy?
Nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy is damaged capillaries which leak blood resulting in lipids and fluid seeping into the retina. This is turn leads to hemorrahages within the retina and macular edema.
How is nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy treated?
Glucose control
What is proliferative diabetic retinopathy?
Proliferative diabetic retinopathy is chronic hypoxia results in new blood vessel formation with resultant tracton on the retina.
How is proliferative diabetic retinopathy treated?
- peripheral retinal photocoagulation
- surgery
- anti-VEGF
