Diabetic Medication Flashcards
Alpha-glucosidase Inhibitor
slows absorption of the CHO in GI tract; decreases BG through breakdown starchy foods
Biguanides aka Metformin
first line treatment; decrease glu production in liver; decrease insulin resistance: improved gly-control;
Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Antagonist (GLP1)
works like a natural hormone: increase insulin secretion; inhibits glucagon secretion; suppresses appetite w/ delayed gastric emptying
Insulin
normalizes HbA1c; potential weight gain and hypoglycaemia
DPP-4 Inhibitor
preserves insulin production; reduces BG w/out hypogymcaemia.
Sodium glucose transporter 2-inhibitor
prevents kidneys retaining glucose; excretes through urine
Sulfonylureas
incrased pancreatic beta-cell production of insulin; HE insulemia; decreased HbA1c; potential to accelerate B-cell failure; promotes WG and HOGLY
