Cholesterol-lowering Medication Flashcards
Common prescribed conditions
hyperlipidemia; CVD risk patients; diagnosed CVD patients (e.g. stroke or MI)
Reasons for prescribed medications
treats abnormal/high levels of types of fats; reduces risk of atherosclerosis in people w/ risk or w/ disease
Classes of lipid lowering meds
- Statins
- Cholesterol binding resins
- Niacin
- Fibric acid derivatives
- Cholesterol absorption inhibitors
List five HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors
- Atorvastatin
- Lovastatin
- Pravastatin
- Simvastatin
Mechanism of HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors
inhibits production of cholesterol in liver by blocking enzyme HMG-CoA reductase; increases LDL receptor turnover rate; lowers LDL; modest affect on increasing HDL
Mechanism of Fibric Acid Derivatives
lowers TRG; raises HDL levels; most common in some diabetic patients
Mechanism of Resins
inhibits liver secreting bile acid; decreases cholesterol break down; interefers with cholesterol reabsorption; lowers LDL
Mechanism of Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitors
blocks cholesterol absorption
