Posterior to medial malleolus
Posterior tibial pulse
Lateral to extensor hallucis tendon
Squeeze calves
Tenderness suggests critical ischaemia or DVT
Sensation
Light touch with monofilament
Vibration sense with 128Hz
Proprioception
Ankle jerk reflex
Reduced speed in gait
May be reduced in patients with advanced peripheral neuropathy
Stance- broad based gait
Associated with advanced peripheral neuropathy to increase stability
High-stepping steps
May indicate foot drop
Turning
Patients with peripheral neuropathy may look down at their feet whilst turning due to impairment of sensation and proprioception
