A person’s risk of developing diabetes.
What non modifiable risk factors are included?
Age
Gender
Ethnicity
Relative w/ diabetes
Give the age scores
49 ≥ = 0
50 ≤ age < 60 = 5 points.
60 ≤ age < 70 = 9 points.
≥70 = 13 points.
What gender scores?
Male (1 point)
What is the only ethnic group that doesn’t score?
White european
What do all other ethnic groups score?
6 points
What does a relative with diabetes score?
5 points.
What modifiable risk factors are included?
Waist measurement (circumference)
BMI (height and weight)
HTN / Rx meds for it
Give the waist circumference scores
90 cm (35.5 in) ≥ = 0
90 ≤ cm < 100 = 4 points.
100 ≤ cm < 110 = 6 points.
≥ 110 cm = 9 points.
Give the BMI scores
<25 = 0
25 - 29.9 = 3
30-34.5 = 5
35 ≤ = 8
What does HTN / Rx meds for it score?
5 points
What are the overall scores and what do they mean?
Low risk = 0 – 6 points
- 1 in 100 risk
Increased risk = 7 – 15 points
- 1 in 35 risk.
Moderate risk = 16 – 24 points
- 1 in 10 risk.
High risk = 25 – 47 points
- 1 in 4 risk.
What lifestyle advice can you give?
Regular meals
