diabetes mindmap Flashcards
diabetes
failure in the regulation of glucose uptake by cells
type 1 and type 2
sweet smelling urine cause
glucose travels in bloodstream thru glomerulus, glucose filtered out of glomerulus and collected by bowman’s capsule, goes to Proximal convoluted tubule that doesn’t reabsorb glucose back into blood bc body’s concentration too high which causes less glucose reabsorbed and more expelled in urine
type 1 diabetes cause
autoimmune
cytotoxic t cells inappropriately target beta cells (insulin producers) in pancreas/ islets of langerhans resulting in less cells able to take glucose out of blood
type 1 diabetes treatment
injection of insulin
liver can still take glucose out of blood if receive insulin, but pancreas can’t produce insulin needed)
autoimmune disorder
disease caused by mistaken response of a he body’s own immune system
type 2 diabetes
develops over time
liver cells become resistant to insulin and do not reduce glucose levels
as result beta cells continually produce more insulin, eventually wearing out
= high resistance to insulin, low levels of insulin production
type 2 diabetes treatment
diet, exercise, medications
risk factors of type 2 diabetes
age, obesity, high blood presssure
if a diabetic has ate less than usual what might occur
low bloood sugar why?
insulin
from beta cells: take glucose out of blood
store it as glycogen
receptors and modulator for glucose production
alpha and beta cells
alpha cells produce
glucagon -
