Diabetes insipidus Flashcards
1
Q
diabetes insipidus
A
= large amounts of dilute urine produced = extreme thirst
2
Q
types of diabetes insipidus
A
- Cranial = HYPOTHALAMUS NOT MAKE ENOUGH ADH
tx = vasopressin/desmopressin - Nephrogenic = tx thiazides diuretics;
KIDNEY NOT RESPOND TO ADH
3
Q
Desmopressin
A
more potent analogue of vasopressin with longer duration of action + no vasoconstrictor effects
4
Q
Desmopressin use
A
~ diabetes insipidus
~ Nocturnal enuresis
5
Q
Desmopressin SE
A
Hyponatraemic convulsions
6
Q
SIADH (syndrome of inappropriate anti-diuretic hormone) secretion
A
~ hypONatraemia caused by inappropriate secretion of ADH
tx = fluid restrict !!!
if not enough
~ demeclocycline = blocks renal tubular effects ADH
~ Tolvaptan = vasopressin antagonist
AVOID rapid correction as osmotic demyelination of neuron risk = serious CNS effects
