SubQ injection, insulin syringe (unit) ONLY, 90 degree angle, and hold in place to ensure full dose is administered.
Rapid Acting Insulin
Names: Novolog, Humalog, and Apidra
Onset: 5 to 15 minutes
Peak: 30 to 120 minutes
Duration: about 3 to 5 hours
Short Acting Insulin (U100)
Names: Humulin-R and Novolin-R
Onset: 30 minutes
Peak: 2 to 4 hours
Duration: 5 to 8 hours
Short Acting Insulin (U-500)
Name: Humulin-R U-500
Onset: 30 minutes
Peak: 4 to 8 hours
Duration: 14 to 15 hours
Intermediate Acting Insulin (NPH)
Names: Humulin N and Novolin N
Onset: 2 to 4 hours
Peak: 4 to 10 hours
Duration: 10 to 18 hours
Long Acting Insulin
Levemir:
- Onset: 1 to 3 hours
- Peak: 6 to 8 hours
- Duration: 18 to 20 hours
Lantus:
- Onset: 2 to 4 hours
- Peak: None
- Duration: 20 to 24 hours
Toujeo:
- Onset: 2 to 4 hours
- Peak: None
- Duration: ~24 hours
