diabetes Flashcards
1
Q
describe the homeostasis of hyperglycaemia
A
when food is eater the blood glucose levels rise. This rise is detected by the beta cells in the pancreas. These secrete insulin as a result which has an action on liver (stores glucose as glycogen), muscle, adipocytes and CNS
No glycogen storage in the brain - relies on blood glucose for supply
2
Q
describe the homeostasis of hypoglycaemia
A
fasting/overnight fast
fall in blood glucose
glucagon release from pancreatic alpha cells
endodgenous glucose production i.e. glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis
3
Q
describe insulin
A
• Protein Hormone
Derived from proinsulin
4
Q
name the cell types of the pancreas
A
• Alpha cells - glucagon beta cells - insulin • Delta cell - somatostatin Epsilon - ghrelin PP cells produce pancreatic polypeptide cells
