What is type 1 diabetes?
The absolute lack of insulin production, immune system attacks the beta cells in the pancreas
What is type 2 diabetes?
Accounts for 90% of cases, is caused by building up a resistance to insulin, usually due to obesity
What is secondary diabetes?
Another condition that induces diabetes
What are examples of diseases that can induce diabetes?
Acromegaly - causes the release of glucose from cells
Cushings disease - excess cortisol production, which is a counter-regulatory hormone of insulin
Chronic pancreatitis - common in alcohol abuse, no pancreas left to produce insulin
What are symptoms and signs of diabetes
Polyuria, polydipsia, weight loss, glycosuria, recurrent skin infraction due to glucose secreted onto skin
