Diabetes Flashcards
The risk factors for type 2 diabetes are
Age, obesity and physical activity. Smoking doesn’t implement type 2
Untreated diabetes can result in
Tinnitus
Blood sugars is well controlled when haemoglobin a1c is
Below 7%
What are symptoms of diabetes
Excessive thirst, tired, weight loss or gain, blurred vision,
What does the pancreas do.?
Performs exocrine and endocrine functions?
Exocrine- excreting substances to aid digestion
Endocrine- manufacturing blood glucose regulating hormones
Which cells perform the majority of endocrine tasks?
Alpha and beta
What does alpha do?
Alpha cells secrete a hormone called glucagon which raises blood sugar.
What is glucagon?
It is a hormone that ensures there is enough blood sugar present in order for the brain to function effectively.
What are beta cells?
The are responsible for manufactur of insulin.
What does insulin do?
Insulin lowers blood sugars and regulates the use of glucose by every single cell in the body
What does diabetes happen?
When beta cells slow down or stop insulin production
Also maybe because the body rejects insulin function
Type 1 diabetes is easily diagnosed , why?
Because it has dramatic symptoms and associated with ketonuria. Random raised blood sugars
What’s the treatment for type1?
Insulin
What is the treatment for type 2?
Firstly start with diet
Then add an exercise plan
Oral tablets
Plus insulin in some cases
What is type 2?
The body doesnt produce enough insulin.
Or produces insulin but cannot respond to it properly.
Called insulin resistance.
If insulin does not work properly the body cannot take up enough glucose . Results in rising glucose levels in the blood stream
