what is type 1 diabetes?
- an autoimmune condition where the b ( beta) cells are attacked
- so they cannot produce insulin
what is type 2 diabetes?
- body cells dont respond to insulin
- because receptors dont function properly
what is hyperglycaemia?
high blood glucose concentration
what causes hyperglaemia
insulin not produced by beta cells
(in type 1 diabetes)
why is there some glucose in the urine of type 1 diabetics?
the kidneys cant reabsorb all the excess glucose in the blood
how is type 1 diabetes treated?
- insulin injections
- eating regular meals
- avoiding too much simple carbohydrate
how is type 2 diabetes treated?
- healthy, balanced diet
- regular exercise
- losing weight
why should simple carbohydrates be avoided for diabetics?
- simple carbohydrates are more easily broken down
- the blood glucose conc would increase rapidly
- causes hyperglycaemia
list 5 risk factors of type 2 diabetes?
- family history
- lack of exercise

what is the difference between type 1 and 2 diabetes (for when they are aquired in life?)
type 1 = aquired earlier on in life
type 2 =aquired later on in life

- glucose lowering drugs
- insulin injections
why might food companies be reluctant to make food healthier?
- costs money
- may decrease porfits
what has been advice to companies from health advisors regarding type 2 diabetes?
- reduce advertising for junk food
- improve nutritional value of products
- clearer labelling
