what is LADA
autoimmune diabetes. the body attacks the beta cells in the pancrease
What is type 1 diabetes?
Insulin dependant. The beta cells are destroyed in the pancreas, usually diagnosed in children.
what is type 2 diabetes?
non-insulin-dependent. usually in adults with obesity and hypertension. The body is prohibited from making insulin.
what does the endocrine gland do?
produces hormones
what does the exocrine gland do?
releases bicarbonate sodium that neutralizes acid in the stomach.
what is hypoglycemia
when the body sugar is lower than 60. It can cause nausea, headaches, paleness, confusion, fatigue, anxiety, and shakiness
what is hyperglycemia?
too much sugar in the body. It can cause fatigue, irritation, frequent urination, dry mouth, itchiness, and fruity breath
what is the purpose of insulin?
breaks down glucose, protein, and fat for energy
what is glucagon?
glucose to elevate severe hypoglycemia
what is lispro/aspart?
short-acting insulin, 30 min onset 2-3 hour peak
what is Novolin R and Humilin R?
regular insulin, 3 mon onset and 2-3 hour peak, add 50 from 151
what is Novolin N and humulin N
NPH, intermediate-acting. The onset of 1-1.5 hrs and peak 4-12 hrs
what is Glargine and Detemir?
long-acting insulin. onset 3-6 hr and No peak. never mixed and given as basal.
Metformin
last solution for type 2 diabetics. Very hard on the kidneys and liver and should never be taken with contrast.
