Diabetes Flashcards
What is diabetes mellitus?
an illness when blood glucose levels are not controlled
What is hyperglycemia?
dangerously high blood glucose concentration
What is hypoglycaemia?
dangerously low blood glucose concentration
What causes type 1 diabetes
immune system kills the b cells in the iselts of
langerhans - can’t make insulin
this happens to children and young adults
What causes type 2 diabetes?
obesity lack of exercise poor diet b-cells don't make enough insulin liver and muscle cells stop responding to insulin adults and elderly
What effects does type 1 and 2 have on blood glucose concentration?
type 1 -
rise after eating carbohydrates - can result in hyperglycemia
stays high - kidneys can’t remove all glucose from urine
type 2 -
rise in blood glucose after eating carbohydrates - hyperglycaemia
What are the treatments for type 1 diabetes?
insulin injection / pump
too much insulin can result in hypoglycemia
avoid simple carbohydrates e.g. sugars
eat at regular intervals
regular exercise to use up glucose - need less insulin
What are the treatments for type 2 diabetes?
eat healthily
lose weight
regular exercise
drugs to - reduce amount of glucose that is released - to increase bodys sensitivity
to insulin - and to make the body produce more insulin
insulin injections
