DI 2 Final - Tumor Flashcards
what’s the most common source of osteoblastic metastatic carcinoma in adult F?
Breast CA
3 common causes of solitary sclerotic (ivory) vertebral body!
- Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Osteoblastic metastatic**
- Paget’s dz
Is it common to find a tumor involving a jt?
NO
Is multiple myeloma more common in the vertebral body or neural arch?
Vertebral body!
What malignancy demonstrates as a cold bone scan?
Multiple myeloma
Which is the most dense primary malignant bone tumor?
Multiple myeloma 1st
2nd - osteosarcoma
3rd - condroscarcoma (kid)
4th - ewing’s (kid)
What’s the common age range of primary osteosarcoma?
10-25 y/o
What’s the difference btwn sunburst & onion skin appearance?
Sunburst: periosteal spokes of wheel pattern (skull lesions, lytic, osteosarcoma)
Onion: layered/laminated periosteal, Ewing’s tumor
Which part of the bone is commonly involved in osteosarcoma?
Metaphysis of long bone (distal femur, prox tibia/humerus)
What’s codman’s triangle?
Periosteal bone formation interrupted/incompletely cover surface of lesion (periosteum lifts off cortex) - osteosarcoma
–Triangle: several layers of periosteal rxn at lesion - avoid for Bx
Why is Ewing’s sarcoma commonly found in diaphysis of long bone?
Red BM - diaphysis, reticulum cell sarcoma
What’s geographic appearance?
confined to relatively specific area, easily defined, benign
Which condition presents w/solitary exostosis that points away from nearest joint?
Osteochondroma
What’s the radiographic difference in appearance btwn osteochondroma & benign solitary expansile osteolysis?
Osteochondroma: Bony exostosis: cortex continueous w/host bone, pedunculated, calcify cartilage cap, projects AWAY from jt
Benign Solitary: expansile, large, lytic, separated, thin cortex, ONLY TUMOR CROSSES GROWTH PLATE
Incidence of malignant transformation in osteochondroma & hereditary multiple exostosis?
Osteochondroma: 1%
HME: 20%
