DHUBS 2 Week 1 - Bone Flashcards
What are the basic cell types of bone?
Osteocytes
Osteoblasts
Osteoclasts
What is the function of osteocytes?
Mature bone cells
Maintain bone structure
What are the functions of osteoblasts?
Bone forming cells
What are the functions of osteoclasts?
Bone-resorbing cells
What are the building blocks of bone?
Water, organic material and inorganic material
What makes up organic material and what is organic materials purpose?
Various types of collagen, mainly Type I and Type III
They provide tensile strength and flexibility.
What makes up inorganic material and what is inorganic materials purpose?
Hydroxyapatite crystals
Provide rigidity and hardness to bone.
What are the 4 types of bone classifications?
Provide an example for each type.
Long bone - Humerus or femur
Short bone - carpals
Flat bone - sternum
Irregular bone - vertebrae
List the various parts of the long bone and their functions.
Epiphysis:
- contains red bone marrow for blood cell production
- absorbs shock
- provides support
Epiphyseal Plate:
- critical for growth
Diaphysis:
- The shaft of the long bone
- allows blood vessels and nerve supply to the bone
- has yellow marrow that stores fat
Metaphysis:
- Mix of compact and spongey bone
- contains epiphyseal plate during childhood
