DF9- Isomerism Flashcards
Define structural isomerism
Molecules have same molecular formula but different structural formula
Define stereoisomerism
Molecules have same structural formula, but different arrangement of atoms in space
What are the 3 types of structural isomerism?
- chain
- position
- functional group
Define chain isomerism
Type of structural isomerism; hydrocarbons with 4 or more carbons can form branched or chain isomers
E.g. C5H12=pentane, 2-methylbutane, 2,2-dimethylpropane
Define position isomerism
When a functional group is situated in different positions on a molecule
Define functional group isomerism
When molecules have same molecular formula but different functional groups
Where would the hydrogen atoms be in trans-but-2-ene?
On opposite sides of double bond
What does cis-but-2-ene look like?
Hydrogens on same side of double bond
What are the requirements of E/Z isomers?
- no rotation around double bond
- different groups on each C in double bond
