DF3- Alkanes Flashcards
What are alkanes
Saturated hydrocarbons- compounds made only from carbon and hydrogen, that contain maximum number of hydrogen atoms
Give general formula of alkanes
CnH2n+2
Define homologous series
Same general formula, each member differs by CH2
Give first 4 alkanes in order of carbons
- methane
- ethane
- butane
- propane
Define structural isomer
Same molecular formula, different structural arrangement
Define aromatic compounds
Compounds that contain 1 or more benzene rings
Define aliphatic compounds
Carbons are joined in branched/unbranched chains, do not contain benzene ring
Define cyclic hydrocarbons
Carbons are joined in a ring
What is benzene?
- Ring of 6 carbons
- has special properties
Define functional group
Modifier on organic molecule responsible for its characteristic chemical reactions
Why don’t alkanes mix with water?
- contain non polar molecules
- water contains polar molecules; attract each other and prevent alkanes molecules mixing with them
What determines if alkanes is solid, gas or liquid?
Size of molecule
