DF.8 Flashcards
Combustion of fuels, gas calculations, and the ideal gas equation
What products are formed when carbon based fuels go through complete combustion?
Carbon dioxide and water.
What other gas is a product when incomplete combustion take place?
Carbon monoxide.
How many cm3 is in 1 dm3?
1000
What does RTP refer to?
Room temperature and pressure.
What is molar volume?
The volume occupied by one mole of any gas at a particular temperature and pressure.
What is the molar volume of gas at RTP?
24dm3.
Why does one mole of any gas occupied the same volume?
Because the size of each molecule is so relatively small compare to the distance between molecules so the difference in molecule sizes can be ignored.
When temperature and pressure are not in RTP, what tool do you use to work out the volume of a gas?
Ideal gas law.
What is the equation for ideal gas law?
pV = nRT pressure p(Pa) x volume V(m3) = number of gas n(mol) x gas constant R(JK-1mol-1) x temperature T(K)
What is the unit for pressure in the ideal gas equation?
Pa
What is the unit for volume in the ideal gas equation?
m3
What is the unit for temperature in the ideal gas equation>
K
