- Lenin’s testament instructed senior communists to remove Stalin from his position

- Stalin split with Bukharin in 1928
- used his influence as General Secretary to prevent Bukharin from attending important meetings
- e.g. 1 time forced Bukharins plane down twice for medical checks - missed Central Committee meeting and opportunity to extend influence

- 1921 Factions banned (smaller groups within the Communist Party)
- 1928 Stalin circled rumours he was forming alliance with Z & K
- to prevent this - Bukharin organised meeting with Z & K
- Stalin revealed secret meeting to Central Committee - Bukharin accused of Factionalism
