DEVIATIONS FROM MENDELISM Flashcards
clearly define and give examples
In a cross between true-breeding red and white flowers, the F1 progeny obtained was pink. In what flowers do we see this phenomenon?
snapdragon/dog flower/ANTIRRHINUM
Mirabilis jalpa
The phenotypic and genotypic ratio obtained when the F1 generation was crossed in incomplete dominance
genotype: 1:2:1
phenotype: 1:2:1
INCOMPLETE DOMINANCE
Incomplete dominance is a form of Gene interaction in which both alleles of a gene at a locus are partially expressed, often resulting in an intermediate or different phenotype
CODOMINANCE
Codominance is a form of inheritance wherein the alleles of a gene pair in a heterozygote are fully expressed. As a result, the phenotype of the offspring is a combination of the phenotype of the parents.
an example for codominance is
- ab-blood type in humans
- sickle cell Anaemia
many alleles coding for one trait
multiple allelism
define pleiotropy
A condition in which a single gene influences more than one trait.
EX: starch synthesis in pea plant
PKU is an inborn autosomal recessive metabolic disorder in which the individual lacks phenylalanine hydroxylase that converts phenylalanine to tyrosine
PLEIOTROPY
polygenic inheritance
the phenomenon in which a single trait is controlled by many genes
skin color in human beings
polygenic inheritance
