Deviation From Social Norms Flashcards
What is deviation from social norms?
When a person behaves signifciantly different to how they are expected to act in their specific culture.
Norms are specific to the culture in which we live in. For example homosexuality across the UK is primary regarded as normal and wouldn’t be viewed as a deviation from social norm. However in countries such as Quatar homosexuality is seen as abnormal and is punishable. This shows that their are very few universal accepted behaviour.
E.g psychopathy would be seen as a deviation from social norm as they possess different views and morals than the rest of the population.
What are the evaluation points for deviation of social norms?
It has real world application as it it used in clinical practice to diagnose someone with antisocial personality disorder as they fail to comply with the expectations of a regular person in society
Unable to use cross culturally as one cultures social norms will be seen as different as those of another. Therefore a migrant may be viewed as abnormal as they have certain chacteristics and produce certain behaviours but in their homeland these are viewed as normal however in there new country viewed as abnormal therefore cannot be always used/ reliable
Subjective as to wether something is seen as abnormal or not as is subjective and a person can change their behaviour as people have free will
