What is the definition of Deviance?
Behaviour that goes against the dominant social norms of a specific group or society, which causes some kind of critical reaction or disapproval.
What is the definition of norm?
Norms are social expectations that guide behaviour and explain why people act in the way they do.
In the UK we wear dark sombre colours for a funeral but in China the colour of mourning is white
What Are moral codes?
Good ways of behaving.
What are values?
Rules shared by most people in a given culture.
Identify two informal sections
Parents grounding a child
Name calling
Identify two examples of formal sanctions
Fines
Even imprisonment may be appropriate for some deviant acts
What are the three forms of deviance ?give an example for each
Admired behaviour- saving a life while putting own at risk. As most people would not do so.
Odd behaviour- living with an excessive number of cats.
Bad behaviour- assaulting a pensioner
Give an example of an act that may be deviant but not criminal
Cross-dressing
Give an example of an act that is classed as criminal but may not be deviant
Illegal downloading of music from the internet
Give an example of an act that is considered both criminal and deviant.
