i. General way of understanding the relationship between development (age) and its maladaptive deviations (behavior)

What are some of the problems with the approach to child psychopathology prior to this field?
A
- lack of emphasis on the childhood roots
- they would start with an adult with the disorder and then applied to children
- Qualitative differences were not looked at

What contributed to the change in the way childhood psychopathology was looked at?
A
Edelbrock and Achenbach (1981) started to think about depression in children
- 1300 children study
- Wanted to find out the statistical differences between referred children and normal children
- They asked the parents if their children looked angry or depressed?
