developmental psych test 1 Flashcards
plasticity
the brain’s ability to change and reorganize.
this is why children can learn the language easier than adults.
how do children actively develop
Infants and children are trying to understand the world around them, playing pretend and acting.
continuous changes
Quantitive (changes in amount)
Getting better and better and better at something.
Developmental psychologists would view the first word as a continuous change.. While on Monday child was saying “du du du du du” and on Tuesday she produced the word duck. A matter of perspective.
discontinuous changes
Qualitative changes (changes in kind)
Abilities emerge that didn’t exist before
Ex. saying your first word… on Monday child did not speak but on Tuesday she said duck.
bioecological model
we recognize scientifically that it takes a village to raise children
holistic perspective
the connectedness between physical, cognitive and social-environmental development.
ex. children typically learn to crawl, say their first word and fear strangers all at the same time.
