Developmental Delay Flashcards
What does “global delay” mean?
Some children with delayed development, it seems that no one area of development is spared.
What graphs are used to help define what “normal development” is for a child?
Denver Developmental Assessment (Denver II) graphs
When is a child considered to have a delay in reaching a milestone?
When 90% of normal children would be expected to have attained that milestone and the child has not yet.
What are the four major areas of normal development that are assessed at each scheduled well-child visit?
Gross motor
Fine motor
Language/speech
Social/personal
Whenever there is a language delay, what must be considered?
Hearing deficient. All children whose speech is delayed should receive a screening audiology exam
Persistent fisting at 3 months of age is often an early indication of what?
Neuromotor dysfunction
What is an Apgar score?
Assessment of newborn health via a 10-point scale evaluated at 1 minute and 5 minutes.
What five categories are part of the Apgar score?
Appearance Pulse Grimace Activity Respiration
If the APGAR score remains at <4 at later time points, what is the child at risk for developing?
Long-term neurological damage
What is the Moro reflex?
“hang on for life” reflex - abduct/extend limbs when startled, and then draw together.
What is the rooting primitive reflex?
Movement of head toward one side if cheek or mouth is stroked (nipple seeking)
What is the primitive sucking reflex?
Sucking response when roof of mouth is touched.
Primitive palmar reflex?
Curling of finders if palms of hands are stroked
Babinski reflex?
Dorsiflexion of large toe and fanning of other toes with plantar stimulation.
Gallant Reflex?
Stoking along one side of the spine while newborn is in ventral suspension (face down) causes lateral flexion of lower body toward stimulated side.
